Trump Ocean Joke: Google Rejected Ocean Renaming Idea

The trump ocean joke landed at a Friday campaign rally in Georgia, where President Donald Trump told supporters he had once called Google and floated the idea of naming an ocean after himself — and said the company turned him down.

Speaking to the crowd, Trump claimed he had suggested to representatives of the tech giant that either the Atlantic or the Pacific Ocean be renamed the “Trump Ocean.” According to his account, Google responded with exasperation, telling him they had done enough and would not do any more renaming.

Georgia Rally Remarks

Trump said he sent Google a map labeled “Trump Ocean” and quoted the company’s representatives as telling him that oceans are different from gulfs and lakes because they span many countries — and that this request simply could not be done. He told supporters the whole exchange had only been a joke, then added that the proposal was far from the worst idea he had ever had.

Google’s Reported Response

It was not immediately clear whether Trump’s alleged phone exchange with Google actually took place. The president has a history of testing out renaming ideas publicly: he has previously suggested an ocean could carry his name, and has also floated rechristening the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait.”

Renaming Track Record

The remark builds on two renamings Trump has already pushed through. He renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” by executive order in 2025, and in August 2026 he renamed Lake Ontario, on the Canadian border, “Lake America.” Google Maps adopted both changes for users in the United States, which Trump appeared to treat as a precedent for his ocean pitch.
