Broncos Beat Seahawks 17-14 in Overtime Thriller
The broncos seahawks overtime battle ended in Denver’s favor Thursday night, as Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted Sam Darnold’s pass in the extra period and Wil Lutz drilled a 53-yard field goal to give the Broncos a 17-14 victory.
Denver emerged from a brutal six-week season-opening stretch with a 4-2 record despite an injury-riddled roster and a shaky offense. Seattle fell to 3-3, losing for the second time in five days and matching its loss total from last season, when it won the Super Bowl.
How the Ending Unfolded
Denver appeared to have the game won in regulation when Kris Abrams-Draine picked off Darnold at the Denver 30 with 1:25 left. But the Broncos burned just 15 seconds of clock before punting, and the Seahawks drove to Jason Myers’ 34-yard field goal with three seconds left to force overtime.
In the extra period, McMillian jumped a pass intended for Rashid Shaheed at the Denver 43 — Darnold’s second interception of the night — and Lutz did the rest from long range.
A Defensive Grind
The Broncos’ depleted defense sacked Darnold five times and hit him 17 times. Bo Nix led two long first-half scoring drives, with J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey each punching in rushing touchdowns to build a 14-3 lead.
Seattle clawed back with an 11-play, 67-yard drive capped by George Holani’s one-yard score, plus a two-point conversion, to pull within 14-11 with 5:41 left. Injuries piled up on both sides: Broncos running back Tyler Badie left with a thumb injury, Jaylen Waddle was evaluated for a shoulder injury but returned, and Denver played without star cornerback Patrick Surtain II and safety Talanoa Hufanga.
