Wall Street Eyes CPI Report as Stocks Climb

Wall Street climbed on Wednesday as traders positioned for the September CPI inflation report, the morning’s make-or-break data for the market’s rate outlook. The consumer price figures are due at 12:30 GMT.

Economists expect headline inflation of 3.6% year over year, up from 3.4% in August, with core prices rising 0.2% on the month. A hotter number could force investors to rethink bets on the Federal Reserve’s next moves; a cooler one would extend the rally.

Big Banks Report Before the Open

Bank of America and Morgan Stanley are set to report third-quarter results before the opening bell, kicking off earnings season for the big lenders. Shares of Bank of America slipped about 1.5% in premarket trading after the bank disclosed a $1.21 billion regulatory fine.

Investors will watch net interest income and trading revenue closely, alongside any guidance from bank executives about lending conditions heading into year-end.

Fed Signals and Market Backdrop

New York Fed President John Williams said Tuesday that one more rate increase this year might be appropriate, while adding he saw no need for further tightening in 2027. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield held near 5.20%.

Energy prices stayed in focus as Brent crude traded around $105 to $106 a barrel, supported by lingering supply worries tied to the Middle East. Futures for the S&P 500 and Dow pointed to a modestly higher open as Wall Street braced for the inflation data.
