Ukraine Drone Attack: Massive Overnight Strikes on Russia

The ukraine drone attack carried out overnight Saturday into Sunday was one of the largest of the year, as Kyiv sent long-range drones deep into Russian territory — striking a key oil terminal — in open defiance of President Donald Trump’s demand that it stop targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure.

Russia’s defense ministry said its air defenses intercepted 1,015 Ukrainian drones overnight in multiple regions. One target was the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal, which Russian authorities say can handle up to 12.5 million tons a year. Fire Point, the Ukrainian company that builds the drones used in the raid, said a fire broke out on the terminal’s grounds after the strike.

St. Petersburg Hit, Casualties Reported

A logistics center belonging to Russian distributor Ozon in St. Petersburg also came under attack, the company said. Local authorities reported one person killed and five wounded in the strikes, with residential homes damaged as well.

Zelensky Cites 76 Russian Energy Attacks

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on X Sunday that Russia had hit Ukraine’s energy, oil and gas sectors 76 times since the US president announced the energy ceasefire a week earlier. “America should see that Russia is not taking any reciprocal steps in response to sanctions relief or agreements,” he wrote, adding that Moscow reads every such signal as proof its war bet is paying off.

The strikes come amid a deteriorating relationship between Zelenskyy and Trump, who last week called Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries a “disgrace.” Trump said a week ago that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop hitting each other’s energy infrastructure, as the White House tries to ease oil and diesel prices ahead of the midterms. Neither Kyiv nor Moscow acknowledged any such agreement — Ukraine briefly paused its energy strikes but has since resumed them, while Russia never stopped pounding Ukraine’s power plants and cities. Trump also waived US sanctions on imports of Russian diesel and, on Friday, exempted Russia from sweeping economic penalties mandated by Congress, sparking criticism even from Republicans.

Russia Pounds Ukraine’s Grid

In the 24 hours to Sunday morning, Russian missile and drone attacks killed 11 people and injured nearly 50 across Ukraine, Ukrainian authorities said, including what they described as a massive strike on energy facilities in the Odesa region.

Zelenskyy also said restrictions remain on Ukraine’s use of the Starlink system to guide short-range and battlefield drones, including for shooting down jet-powered Shahed drones — curbs the Trump administration denies imposing.
