Trump Enriching Himself: 66% Say Yes in New Poll

The trump enriching himself question has become a central midterm issue, with nearly two in three Americans — 66% — saying President Donald Trump is using the presidency to enrich himself, according to a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll released Sunday. Most of the increase over the past year has come from people who lean Republican.

Among Republicans and independents who lean Republican, 34% now believe Trump is enriching himself, up from 22% in September 2025. Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents were already nearly unanimous — 88% a year ago, 92% now — while independents who lean toward neither party were unchanged. Overall, the figure is up from 56% last autumn.

A Record High as Midterms Near

The 66% figure is a record high for the question, and it lands less than three weeks before the midterm elections. The same poll put Trump’s job approval at 33%, also a record low for the survey, with 72% of Americans saying the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Democrats have closed their campaigns with a message accusing Trump and Republicans of flagrant corruption, tying self-dealing to the high cost of living. In competitive congressional and governor’s races, Democrats have spent nearly twice as much as Republicans on ads about tackling corruption in Washington, according to the Post, though few of those ads directly accuse Trump of enriching himself. A Fox News poll last week also found government corruption topping voters’ concerns — ahead of even inflation and gas prices.

White House Silent on Findings

The White House did not respond to the Post’s request for comment. Trump’s aides have said his financial situation has worsened since he has been in office, and Trump has told reporters that gains shown in a summer financial disclosure reflected an improved stock market.

The poll also found that 65% of Americans viewed the decision to take military action against Iran as a mistake, while 66% described Trump as “too extreme.” Still, Democrats hold only a narrow edge on the corruption question: about one-third of Americans said Democrats would do a better job of reducing corruption, compared with about one-quarter who chose Republicans. The survey was fielded Oct. 9–13 with a margin of error of 2 points.
