‘Other Mommy’ Tops Box Office as ‘Social Reckoning’ Flops
The Other Mommy box office debut was the weekend’s clear winner, as Universal and Blumhouse’s horror film starring Jessica Chastain opened at No. 1 with $27.5 million domestically and $45.19 million worldwide.
The result is all the more striking given the film’s poor reviews and a D+ CinemaScore from audiences. Made for just $18 million, the horror entry is already deep into profit territory.
‘The Social Reckoning’ Stumbles
Aaron Sorkin’s Facebook drama ‘The Social Reckoning’ was the weekend’s biggest disappointment, opening in fifth place with $5.5 million — well below the $7 to $8 million projections. The $30 million film drew a soft 54% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The misfire raises questions about theatrical appetite for prestige tech dramas, even with Sorkin’s pedigree behind the project.
The Rest of the Weekend
‘Verity’ took second with $11.5 million, followed by ‘Resident Evil’ at $8.4 million and ‘Heart of the Beast’ at $7.1 million. Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’ tumbled 60% in its second weekend to $3.2 million.
For Blumhouse, the ‘Other Mommy’ result is another reminder of the studio’s low-budget horror formula: modest costs, opening-weekend crowds, and profits that arrive before word of mouth can catch up.
