OpenAI Humanoid Robot: Demo Could Arrive by 2027
An OpenAI humanoid robot is officially in the works, with CEO Sam Altman confirming the company is developing humanoid hardware and suggesting a demonstration could arrive by 2027. The move deepens OpenAI’s push beyond software and into consumer devices and robotics, setting up a direct contest with Tesla’s Optimus and Chinese rivals like Unitree and Xpeng.
Intelligence First, Appearance Second
Altman emphasized that the robot’s intelligence matters more than its appearance, framing the project around AI systems that let machines understand their surroundings and perform useful tasks. The company is hiring hardware specialists aggressively, with 27 open robotics roles focused on motion control, sensing, and machine learning.
The effort draws on OpenAI’s earlier robotics experience, including its Dactyl project, which taught a robotic hand to manipulate objects. Building a robot that handles everyday tasks reliably remains one of the industry’s hardest challenges, and OpenAI is still in the early stages of the program.
A Crowded Race
Competition in humanoid robotics is intensifying. Tesla continues developing its Optimus robot, while China’s Unitree fields fast-moving machines and Xpeng’s IRON can reportedly walk off the production line on its own. Rumors also point to OpenAI eyeing consumer hardware such as smart speakers, but for now the humanoid robot is the headline project — and the 2027 demo target gives the AI race a new physical frontier.
