Ocasio-Cortez Joins El-Sayed on Michigan Bus Tour

The ocasio-cortez el-sayed tour rolled through deeply conservative country Thursday, as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Dr. Abdul El-Sayed on his “Shouldn’t Be This Hard” bus tour through the Upper Peninsula — a region Donald Trump carried by more than 30 percentage points in 2024. Stops in Escanaba, Iron Mountain, and Marquette drew hundreds of attendees to town halls where the pair focused on economic issues, took questions from the crowd, and wove attacks on Republicans into their remarks.

The trip is a show of progressive strength in one of the cycle’s most important races. El-Sayed faces Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers for an open Senate seat that could help decide control of the chamber.

A Day Across the Upper Peninsula

The day began outside a large red storage barn on the fairgrounds in Escanaba, a tiny lakeside city, where lines of committed Democrats said they were surprised and thrilled to see such high-profile visitors in a place national figures rarely go. A small group of Rogers supporters gathered nearby with American flags and signs reading “Nothing Is Free” and “No Green Energy Scam.”

Dueling Messages With Vance

While El-Sayed traded jabs with Rogers throughout the day, the sharpest exchange was with Vice President JD Vance, who was campaigning in Monroe for Rogers and other Michigan Republicans. By nightfall the two camps were locked in a war of words across the state, a preview of the heavyweight surrogate battle Michigan’s Senate race has become.

With the Nov. 3 midterms now less than three weeks away, both parties are pouring their star power into Michigan: the open Senate seat, a governor’s race, and competitive House contests make the state one of the cycle’s biggest prizes.
