Judge Blocks Trump White House Press Ban

A federal judge has blocked the Trump White House press ban targeting journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico, ruling Tuesday that stripping their hard passes likely violated their First and Fifth Amendment rights.

US District Judge Timothy Kelly, himself a Trump appointee, granted a preliminary injunction in a 26-page decision. He found the administration’s effort to remove the reporters’ credentials appeared retaliatory, tied to coverage the White House disliked, rather than to any genuine security concern.

First Amendment Rights at Stake

Judge Kelly wrote that the government could not revoke long-held press credentials without meaningful process or justification. The journalists had their passes for years before the administration moved against them, and the court found the punishment singled them out over the tone of their reporting.

The ruling is a preliminary one, meaning the legal fight continues. But for now, the reporters keep their access while the broader challenge plays out in court.

DOJ Security Argument Rejected

The Justice Department had argued the White House could manage its press corps for national security reasons. The judge rejected that claim, finding no credible security basis for targeting these three outlets specifically.

Press freedom groups praised the decision as an important guardrail against government retaliation toward journalists. The administration has not yet said whether it will appeal the injunction.
