Jalen Hurts Running Less: Eagles QB at Career Low
The jalen hurts running debate is the story of the Philadelphia Eagles season so far, as the star quarterback is keeping the ball himself less than ever before — a career-low 21.4 rushing yards per game that ranks just ninth among NFL quarterbacks, per NBC Sports Philadelphia.
After running for 49 yards in the opener against Washington, Hurts has averaged only 15 rushing yards per game since Week 2. His 61 rushing yards over the last four games are the second-fewest in any four-game stretch since he became a full-time starter in 2021. His two rushing yards in Sunday’s 19-17 loss to Jacksonville were the second-fewest of his 89 career starts.
A New Offense
Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Hurts pointed to change rather than injury as the reason he is running less. He said the Eagles are operating a new offense with different personnel and coaches, which has naturally brought a different approach to how he plays the position.
The quarterback would not commit to running more, saying he feels comfortable and capable but that the offense is still finding its identity. He remains effective when he does take off: his 4.7 yards per carry is his best mark since 2021, and his two runs of 20-plus yards match his total from all of last season.
Coaches Want the Legs Back
The Eagles insist they want Hurts to run more, not less. Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion said Wednesday the staff would like to see more designed runs and scrambles, calling mobility a unique and dangerous part of the quarterback’s game.
Mannion dismissed the idea that a calf injury is holding Hurts back, saying the Jaguars game plan simply called for more passing — Hurts threw 40 times. The numbers suggest the ground game needs him: the Eagles rushed for just 22 yards on 18 carries against Jacksonville, their lowest team total since 2015, while riding a three-game losing streak into Sunday’s matchup with Carolina.
