Charles Booker Fires Back at Trump’s ‘Lunatic’ KY Attack

The charles booker trump clash ignited Saturday after President Donald Trump singled out the Democratic Senate nominee at his Highland Heights rally, branding him a "communist lunatic" and a "laughing stock" who "opposes everything that you stand for."

Trump was campaigning for Republican Rep. Andy Barr, who faces Booker in the race for retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell’s seat, at Truist Arena on Northern Kentucky University’s campus. Barr, whom Trump said would be an ideal senator, joined the president on stage, while thousands of supporters filled the arena just over two weeks before the November 3 midterm election.

Booker, a former state representative, answered within hours. In a statement after the event, he said he was "flattered by his baseless attacks on me." While Barr spent the day "currying favor with Trump, spreading lies, and sowing division," Booker said, he kept traveling the state "hearing firsthand about Kentuckians’ struggles."

"That’s Real Lunacy," Booker Says of Barr

Booker turned Trump’s insult back on the Republican ticket, arguing that the real problem was affordability. "Andy Barr is sitting by while his constituents cannot afford gas, groceries, and other basic necessities. That’s real lunacy," he said.

The Democrat’s campaign sent a fundraising note while Trump and Barr were still walking off the stage, arguing that Trump flew into Kentucky precisely because he was "scared that I’m going to win." The message said Barr had "Trump, billionaires, corporations, and dark money donors" on his side, while Booker asked supporters to help him answer the attacks in the final 17 days.

Barr and the GOP Lean Into the Trump Label

Barr, who won his primary after spending more than a year pledging to help Trump advance his agenda, has leaned into the attacks. He has repeatedly likened Booker to New York Mayor Zorhan Mamdami and stood on stage pointing to investments Kentucky landed during Trump’s second term, telling the crowd that with their help they would "continue to work with this president to make America great again and stop socialism."

Trump also attacked other Democrats by name at the rally, calling Kentucky House Democrat Zach Dembo — running in the state’s competitive 6th Congressional District — a "lunatic" and praising GOP candidate Ralph Alvarado. The president’s swing through Kentucky is part of a multi-state midterm blitz as Republicans try to hold the House and Senate.

A Closing Argument Built on Costs

Both camps framed the final stretch around kitchen-table economics. Trump told the crowd that if Republicans win, every adult American would receive a $5,000 dividend and promised a $100 million defense investment in a Kentucky drug manufacturing plant. Booker countered that tariffs and rising costs have squeezed working families, positioning himself as the candidate for people who "cannot afford gas, groceries, and other basic necessities."

Booker has also been vocal against Trump’s tariff policies, calling them a tax on working people that hurts Kentucky farmers, industries, and small businesses, while Barr has defended the administration’s record.
