Keffe D Gets 40 Years for Tupac Murder
Keffe D sentenced to prison brought a measure of closure to one of hip-hop’s darkest chapters. Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, was sentenced Tuesday by a Las Vegas judge to 40 years to life for orchestrating the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur.
Judge Carli Kierny imposed two consecutive 20-to-life terms. Davis was convicted of first-degree murder by a jury on August 31 and is the first — and only — person ever charged in the case. He will not be eligible for parole until he is around 100 years old.
A Case Solved by His Own Words
The 1996 drive-by shooting that killed the 25-year-old Shakur in Las Vegas went unsolved for decades. The breakthrough came from Davis himself: his 2019 memoir and interviews describing his role in the killing led to his arrest in 2023.
Shakur’s sister Sekyiwa testified at the trial, giving voice to a family that waited nearly 30 years for answers.
What Comes Next
Davis vowed to appeal the sentence as he was led from the courtroom. For Shakur’s fans and family, the sentencing marks the end of a legal journey that began on the night of September 7, 1996.
The case stands as a reminder of how an unresolved tragedy in music history finally found its way to a courtroom, decades after the fact.
