Street Fighter Box Office: $31M Debut Tops Weekend
The Street Fighter box office debut delivered a knockout weekend, with Paramount’s video-game adaptation opening to $31 million domestically and $51.1 million worldwide to claim the top spot. But the weekend’s real story may be the film in second place: the Elizabeth Holmes documentary pulled a stunning $15 million from just 855 theaters, nearly doubling projections.
A Solid Start for the Franchise
The Paramount and Legendary release, starring Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, and Callina Liang as Chun-Li — with a stunt-cast bench including Jason Momoa and Roman Reigns — more than doubled the 1994 original’s opening. The $31 million start lands roughly even with this year’s Masters of the Universe ($29.4 million) but trails Mortal Kombat II ($38.5 million), suggesting a solid rather than spectacular trajectory.
The overall frame was one of October’s healthiest: the domestic box office crossed $103 million for the weekend, up nearly 42% from the same weekend last year.
The Documentary That Stole the Conversation
Technically, Street Fighter won. But everyone is talking about the documentary. The nearly three-hour portrait of the Theranos founder, co-directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, generated more than 2,000 sellouts on its way to $15 million — which Deadline called the second-best opening ever for a documentary at the box office, behind only 2004’s Fahrenheit 9/11.
Elsewhere in the top five, horror entry Other Mommy took third with $8.4 million in its second weekend ($44.85 million domestic total), the Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin survival thriller Whalefall opened fourth with $8 million, and the Jane Austen adaptation Sense and Sensibility debuted fifth with $7.25 million.
