Rays Beat Guardians 3-1, Take 3-2 ALCS Lead

The Rays Guardians ALCS battle tilted Tampa Bay’s way Sunday as the Rays beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 in Game 5 at Progressive Field. Ace Drew Rasmussen delivered seven innings of one-run baseball, striking out six, and the Rays now lead the best-of-seven American League Championship Series 3-2 — one victory from the World Series.

Rasmussen Dominates Over Seven Innings

Rasmussen was in command from the first pitch, spreading his six strikeouts across seven frames and holding Cleveland’s lineup in check. His postseason ERA now sits at 1.29 through three starts. Tampa Bay wasted no time on offense, scoring in each of the first two innings against Cleveland starter Parker Messick, who was gone after just two innings and 57 pitches.

The game’s first run came without a swing: Messick walked Ryan Vilade with the bases loaded, forcing home Yandy Diaz. Jonathan Aranda followed with an RBI single that scored Ben Williamson, and Liam Hicks added another RBI single in the third to build the 3-0 cushion.

Guardians’ Bullpen Keeps It Close

Cleveland’s relief corps kept the game within reach, with five relievers combining to allow just one run over the final seven innings. The Guardians threatened late, forcing Tampa Bay to turn to its high-leverage arms — Cam Booser and Tyler Wells — in the eighth, with Wells striking out Jose Ramirez on an outside cutter to escape trouble. Bryan Baker then closed the door with a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of the postseason.

Both teams flashed the leather in an excellent defensive game. Ramirez threw out Chandler Simpson on a sacrifice bunt attempt, and Steven Kwan robbed an extra-base hit at the center-field wall.

Game 6 Set for Monday Night

The series returns to Tampa for Game 6 on Monday night, where the Rays have a chance to claim their third American League pennant. A Cleveland win would force a decisive Game 7 on Tuesday. Saturday’s rain-postponed Game 4 went Tampa Bay’s 7-3, with Junior Caminero’s tiebreaking RBI double in the sixth and a two-run homer from Yandy Diaz in the ninth evening the series before Sunday’s pivotal swing game.
