AI Startups Grab 86% of US Venture Capital in 2026
The ai venture capital 2026 story is one of staggering concentration: artificial intelligence startups are now swallowing roughly four out of every five venture dollars invested in the United States, according to new data from PitchBook and the National Venture Capital Association’s second-quarter Venture Monitor.
AI companies took $355.9 billion of the $412.7 billion in total U.S. venture capital deployed in the first half of 2026 — about 86% of the entire market. Crunchbase’s global tally puts AI’s share at 64% in the third quarter, down from above 80% earlier in the year but still utterly dominant.
The Giants Eat First
Concentration is most acute at the top. PitchBook data shows OpenAI raised $122 billion in the first half of 2026, with Anthropic adding $30 billion, xAI $20 billion, and Waymo $16 billion. Those four companies alone accounted for nearly two-thirds of global venture funding in the period.
Meanwhile, the number of deals is shrinking: North American deal count fell roughly 26% year over year even as total dollars invested surged about 190%. And the share of Series A companies advancing to a Series B within two years has reportedly collapsed from about 25% to about 9%.
Echoes of the Dot-Com Peak
The comparison to the dot-com era is unavoidable — and the current concentration is even more extreme. At the internet peak, dot-com companies captured roughly half of venture capital; AI’s share today is meaningfully higher.
One key difference, analysts note: today’s AI leaders, including Nvidia, Microsoft, and Alphabet, are profitable businesses trading at multiples well below dot-com extremes. Whether that distinction holds as debt piles up in the data-center buildout is the question hanging over the entire market.
