FBI Employees Sue: Fired Over Trump Files Probe Seek Return
The fbi employees sue saga reached federal court Thursday as nine agents, intelligence analysts and staff operations specialists fired in February over their roles in the investigation of President Donald Trump’s retention of classified documents at his Florida estate sued to get their jobs back, calling their terminations unlawful acts of “political retribution.”
The complaint, filed in federal court in Washington, adds to the growing pile of legal challenges to the mass terminations under FBI Director Kash Patel of agents who took part in investigations of the president or are seen as opposed to the administration’s interests.
The nine were fired in February, after earlier dismissals of agents who had worked on the investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.
Fired for “Doing Their Jobs”
The agents reject Patel’s assertion that the fired employees had “weaponized” the FBI. Between them, they say, they have more than a century of distinguished and apolitical service that included responding to the Boston Marathon bombing, recovering hostages, and investigating the 2024 assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Their firings, the lawsuit says, inflict an “immeasurable loss” on America’s national security. “They were fired because they did their jobs, as they always did to follow the facts and law without bias or favor,” the agents’ attorneys said in a statement. “This lawsuit will prove their unlawful dismissal and hold the administration accountable.”
The agents are represented by attorneys Margaret Donovan, Abbe Lowell and Rebecca Tinio.
A Broader Purge, More Lawsuits
Patel has told Congress that the employees he dismissed weaponized the bureau — a claim the plaintiffs deny. The new case is the latest in a string of lawsuits by fired agents and federal prosecutors, as the courts become the main battleground over the administration’s shake-up of federal law enforcement.
