Kushner Lawsuit: Watchdog Sues Over Trump Envoy Role
The Kushner lawsuit filed Wednesday by a Washington watchdog group has put President Donald Trump’s reliance on his son-in-law as an informal diplomat under fresh legal scrutiny. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) argues that Jared Kushner’s sprawling foreign-policy role is unlawful without Senate confirmation or federal ethics disclosures.
CREW filed the federal suit in Washington, D.C., alleging that Kushner acts as one of the administration’s “go-to foreign policy negotiators,” wielding significant government power while avoiding the financial disclosures and congressional vetting required of senior officials. The group says his investment firm, which manages billions in foreign-owned assets with reported clients including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, poses a heightened conflict-of-interest risk.
What CREW Alleges
The complaint argues that Kushner’s actual responsibilities — not the White House’s description of him as a volunteer — should determine whether he counts as a government employee. It cites his work alongside Special Envoy Steve Witkoff on the wars involving Israel and Hamas, Ukraine and Russia, and Iran, including meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump named Kushner an “envoy” of peace in February, after Kushner served as a senior White House adviser during the first administration. CREW is asking the court to have Kushner removed from the role, or at least require him to file financial disclosure statements.
The White House Responds
Chad Mizelle, an attorney for Kushner, called the suit “without merit,” saying outside ethics counsel and government ethics attorneys reviewed the volunteer arrangement and confirmed it complies with ethics requirements. He said Kushner receives no government salary or compensation and pays his own expenses.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelley said Kushner’s “personal business activities have nothing to do with his diplomatic engagements,” which she said he conducts on a volunteer basis at the president’s request while paying his own expenses. She accused CREW of attacking Trump, his family and his administration since the first term.
