Trump Inflation Defense: Economy Pitch as Prices Climb
The Trump inflation economy clash sharpened this week as the White House mounted a full defense of the president’s economic record, even as new data showed prices climbing nearly a percentage point since the start of his term.
September’s consumer-price report put annual inflation at 3.7 percent, up from 3.4 percent in August and the fastest pace in five months, driven largely by higher motor-fuel costs. The report landed like a political thunderclap with the midterms less than three weeks away.
White House Points to Growth
Administration officials pushed back hard. One White House official said Trump is bringing inflation down after what they called astronomically high inflation under Biden, noting that the food price index was unchanged in September. Spokesman Matthew Middleton said the president’s pro-growth agenda has blunted the prior inflation crisis while driving growth, wages, and private-sector jobs.
Democrats Blame Tariffs and War
Democrats called the numbers proof of failure. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump’s promised “Golden Age” has meant never-ending higher prices for Americans, while former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg blamed the increase on Trump’s war, tariffs, and corporate tax breaks.
Analysts note inflation has risen since early in Trump’s term, fueled by tariff shocks and energy costs tied to the US war with Iran. The Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge stood at 3.7 percent in July, and the central bank does not expect it to return to its 2 percent target before 2029.
