Google DeepMind Opens AI Models to Researchers
Google DeepMind researchers’ mission to advance science is getting company: the AI lab and Google Cloud will give up to 200 European scientific researchers direct access to frontier AI models, backed by $3 million in compute credits.
The initiative pairs the researchers with tools including AlphaFold 3, WeatherNext, AlphaGenome, AlphaEvolve and AlphaEarth Foundations. The goal is to help scientists tackle complex challenges, from forecasting extreme weather to mapping molecular structures.
Frontier Tools for European Science
The program opens doors that few academic teams could open alone. Training and running frontier-scale models requires enormous computing power, and the $3 million in credits removes that barrier for the selected teams.
The lineup of models reads like a catalog of DeepMind’s biggest breakthroughs: protein folding, weather simulation, genome analysis and Earth-scale geospatial reasoning.
A Push for Public-Benefit AI
The announcement frames the effort as public-interest AI — putting powerful models in the hands of scientists working on climate, health and fundamental discovery rather than purely commercial products.
For Google, the move also builds goodwill in Europe as regulators there scrutinize Big Tech AI. For the research community, it is a rare chance to work directly with state-of-the-art systems at real scale.
