Trump EU Tariffs: 50% Threat on European Goods

The Trump EU tariffs threat escalated this week as President Donald Trump warned he would impose a 50 percent levy on all goods imported from the European Union, sending global markets tumbling and reviving fears of a widening trade war.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said negotiations with the EU were going nowhere and described the bloc as difficult to deal with. He said the tariff would begin on June 1, adding that goods built or manufactured in the United States would be exempt.

Why Trump Is Targeting EU Goods

The warning rattled investors. European stock markets dropped sharply, with London’s FTSE 100 falling into the red and indexes in Paris and Frankfurt sliding about 3 percent at one point. The euro weakened, reversing gains from earlier in the week, while US futures pointed to a lower open.

In a separate post, Trump turned his attention to Apple, warning the company could face a 25 percent tariff on iPhones made outside the United States. He said he had told chief executive Tim Cook that iPhones sold to Americans should be manufactured at home rather than in India or other countries.

Markets React to the Tariff Threat

The threats landed just days after a calmer stretch for markets, when the White House finalized a trade agreement with Britain and pulled back from an escalating tariff fight with China. Analysts said the fresh warnings erased that relief almost instantly.

The European Union is one of America’s largest trading partners, and economists warn that sweeping tariffs act as a tax on consumers, pushing up prices while snarling supply chains. Brussels has previously signaled it would retaliate against US measures with levies of its own.

It remains unclear whether the June 1 deadline will hold or whether negotiations could still produce a deal. For now, businesses on both sides of the Atlantic are bracing for another round of trade turbulence.
