Trump Xi Putin Meeting: Open to Trilateral Talks

The trump xi putin meeting took a step closer to reality Monday when President Donald Trump told reporters he would be open to joining a three-way summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Speaking outside the White House before departing on Marine One, Trump said the session could center on nuclear weapons and denuclearization. “We would have it to talk about nuclear weapons and denuclearization,” he told reporters. “If President Xi wants to have it, I’d have it.”

Kremlin Floats APEC Sidelines

Earlier Monday, the Kremlin said a three-way meeting could take place on the sidelines of next month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, and that the idea had come up in recent talks. The leaders’ gathering is scheduled for November 18 and 19 in Shenzhen, China.

The proposal originated with Putin, who raised a trilateral meeting during an October 9 phone call with Trump, according to the Wall Street Journal. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that discussions are underway but cautioned that neither the meeting nor its agenda is settled, while China has signaled it would not object if Trump agrees.

Ukraine Still Off the Guest List

The talks are aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, but Ukraine would not be at the table — a prospect that has unsettled Kyiv and European allies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already criticized Trump’s recent diesel purchase deal with Moscow and his decision to waive key Russia sanctions.

For now, all three sides acknowledge only the hypothetical possibility of a meeting, leaving the most consequential diplomatic gathering of the year in limbo.
