Zelenskyy: U.S. Siding With Putin Would Be Historic Mistake
The zelenskyy historic mistake warning landed Sunday as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the United States formally siding with Russia’s Vladimir Putin would be a “historic mistake” — while insisting he still sees President Donald Trump as a partner.
“We want to support him,” Zelenskyy told moderator Kristen Welker, referring to Trump. “I hope that he will change his decisions, because I think that it’s all mistakes, and it will not help us, and it will not help the United States.”
Friday’s Waiver and the Diesel Deal
The interview followed Trump’s executive order on Friday waiving sweeping new sanctions against Russia passed by Congress, which the president said was “in the national interests of the United States.” Passed with bipartisan support and signed by Trump last month, the measures were designed to choke off Moscow’s revenue by punishing global buyers of Russian oil and gas.
The waiver came days after a deal with Putin to sell hundreds of thousands of tons of Russian diesel onto world markets as fuel prices soar — a move Zelenskyy has called a betrayal that hands Moscow money to fund its war.
Intelligence and Starlink Cutoffs
At the same time, Zelenskyy said, U.S. intelligence sharing was briefly “blocked,” blinding Ukraine to incoming ballistic missiles, while limits were placed on Starlink activity critical to intercepting jet-powered drones. Zelenskyy said Ukrainian officials believe the Starlink restriction came in response to a “message from American government.”
Personal relations between Trump and Zelenskyy have also appeared severely strained in recent weeks. Asked about Trump’s remark this week that the Ukrainian leader was “more difficult to deal with than Putin,” Zelenskyy said he was “very honest” with Trump.
