Hurricane Trudy Mexico: Category 2 Storm Lashes Pacific Coast

The hurricane trudy mexico emergency intensified Sunday as the Category 2 storm raked portions of Mexico’s southwestern and west-central Pacific coast with heavy rain and powerful winds, while the U.S. National Hurricane Center warned of potentially life-threatening flooding and mudslides.

Flash Floods and Mudslides the Main Threat

Trudy’s center was expected to hover near the Mexican coast through Sunday evening before sliding south of the Baja California Peninsula. Forecasters said slight strengthening was possible Sunday morning, with weakening expected later in the day.

The hurricane center warned the storm could drop 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters) of rain through the weekend, with isolated totals of around 12 inches (30 centimeters) along and near the coast in Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco — a recipe for dangerous flash flooding and mudslides, especially in steep terrain.

The Mexican navy urged mariners and coastal residents to exercise extreme caution amid high waves, heavy downpours and the risk of rising rivers. Colima authorities said the immediate danger remained low but cautioned that deluge-like rains could cause major damage because successive storms have already saturated the ground along the Pacific coast.

A Busy Pacific Weekend

A tropical storm warning remained in effect for Las Islas Marias, while a warning for the coast east of Punta San Telmo to Lazaro Cardenas was discontinued. A NOAA GOES-19 satellite image taken Thursday showed the well-organized hurricane churning offshore.

Trudy was not the only Pacific threat: Typhoon Champi strengthened into a Category 4 super typhoon as it moved past Guam, underscoring a volatile stretch for storm systems across the Pacific this weekend.
