Wichita Vehicle Kills 2 at Youth Soccer Complex
The wichita vehicle kills tragedy unfolded Saturday afternoon at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, when a vehicle drove onto a field during a youth soccer game, killing a child and an adult and injuring several others, police said.
Two Dead, Driver in Custody
Capt. Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department said the driver was taken into custody and that there was “no additional ongoing threat to the public from that driver.” The two victims have not been publicly identified.
Police described the scene as a “mass casualty incident” after the vehicle struck multiple people around 3:25 p.m. local time. Officers have not said how many people were hurt or how serious their injuries are, and it remained unclear how fast the vehicle was traveling or how it got onto the playing field.
A witness told local outlet KWCH that a black pickup truck plowed across the youth soccer fields, striking several people before coming to a stop 100 to 200 yards farther on — an account police had not confirmed Saturday evening.
Mass Emergency Response
Bystanders made multiple 911 calls, triggering a large response of police officers, firefighters and other emergency personnel who raced to the complex. Responders treated victims on the field as the area was secured, and local media reported dozens of emergency vehicles at the scene.
Mayor Asks Public to Avoid the Area
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said she was heartbroken by the incident, urged residents to stay away from the area, and said more information would be released as it becomes available. Police said the investigation was ongoing and described the case as a developing story.
