Vance Iran War Disagreement: VP Admits Split With Trump
The vance iran war question broke into the open Friday, as Vice President JD Vance suggested in a televised interview that he may have disagreed with President Donald Trump over the Iran war.
“Even if you disagree with him on that one issue, you can have that disagreement. And I think I have had that disagreement,” Vance said on a political talk show hosted by former White House spokesman Sean Spicer, in an interview aired Friday.
The Tucker Carlson Question
Vance was responding to a question about his relationship with former Trump ally Tucker Carlson, who has sharply criticized the war — arguing it serves Israeli rather than American interests and contradicts Trump’s pledge to avoid costly foreign military interventions. Vance said Carlson was “very, very angry” over the conflict, adding that the two have discussed it privately and publicly: “I know how he feels, and I understand.”
But the vice president urged Carlson not to break with the president over the single issue. “What I’ve said to Tucker is don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater,” Vance said, pointing to closed borders and the end of what he called “ridiculous anti-white racial discrimination” in university admissions as reasons to acknowledge that Trump “has done a lot of good.”
A Rare Crack in the Public Line
The remarks are a notable departure from Vance’s earlier posture. Weeks ago he pushed back on reporters he accused of trying to “drive a wedge” between him and the president, insisting the administration was in “complete harmony” on foreign policy.
The New York Times has previously reported that Vance opposed military action against Iran in pre-war discussions, and Maggie Haberman said on NBC that he “really vocally took issue” with Trump over the war. Until Friday, Vance had kept any disagreement out of his public remarks.
The admission lands as the war continues into its eighth month, weeks before the November 3 midterms.
