Trump ‘Mohammed’ Joke Mocks Middle Eastern Names at Rally
The trump mohammed joke came during a campaign speech on Friday in Dalton, Georgia, where President Donald Trump riffed on the popularity of the name Mohammad in the Muslim world while mocking Iran’s presidency.
Speaking in a hangar at Dalton Municipal Airport while campaigning for Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterms, Trump told the crowd that when in doubt about someone’s name from the Middle East, they should just guess Mohammad — claiming roughly a 65 percent chance of being right and adding that he had never been wrong. Mohammad is one of the most common male names among Muslims, frequently given in honor of the Prophet Mohammad, the founder of Islam.
Iran Remarks Draw a Muted Reaction
The joke landed while Trump was discussing Iran, which he mocked as a country whose presidency nobody wanted. He pretended to ask several imaginary people named Mohammad whether they wanted the job; Masoud Pezeshkian has served as Iran’s president since 2024. The Georgia crowd’s response to the bit was muted.
Trump also repeated his vow that Iran would never obtain a nuclear weapon, seven months after the United States and Israel launched a war on Tehran aimed in part at crippling its nuclear program.
A Pattern of Escalating Rhetoric
Rights advocates and Muslim advocacy groups have repeatedly criticized Trump for rhetoric they say demonizes and mocks Muslims, immigrants and ethnic minorities. Critics say that rhetoric has escalated during the midterm campaign season, aimed in particular at Somali and Muslim Americans including Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
The Council on American Islamic Relations said in an annual report released earlier this year that rising Islamophobia in the United States was driven in part by Trump’s immigration crackdown and actions against pro-Palestinian protests during his second term.
