E. Coli Outbreak: Chicken Wrap Cases Grow Nationwide
The e coli outbreak chicken wraps investigation is expanding. The patient count in an E. coli outbreak traced to chicken wraps is growing, Food Safety News reported Friday — though the FDA and USDA are declining to reveal the brand behind the wraps.
The outbreak is one of several active foodborne-illness investigations the agencies are tracking. In a separate E. coli outbreak tied to raw milk cheese, 13 people have been sickened and eight hospitalized, with three developing hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can cause kidney failure. More than half of the patients in that outbreak are children aged five and younger, spread across nine states.
Raw Milk Cheese Cluster
All nine people interviewed so far in the raw milk cheese outbreak reported consuming Sierra Nevada Graziers grass-fed raw milk cheese, according to the CDC. The FDA first flagged that outbreak on September 25. No deaths have been confirmed.
Other Active Investigations
The FDA is also tracking two Listeria outbreaks: one has sickened 11 people with the source still undetermined, and another has grown to 46 patients, up from 44 a week ago, with traceback efforts underway but the food not yet identified.
Food safety officials urge consumers to check FDA recall notices and seek medical care for severe symptoms — particularly bloody diarrhea or signs of kidney problems in children — which can signal E. coli complications.
